ECG / Cardiac Testing

Cardiac tests (heart tests) give your doctor information about the condition of your heart and can help find out which treatments may be best for you.

ECG –Electrocardiogram

What is an ECG test?

An ECG (electrocardiogram) is used to monitor your hearts rhythm and electrical activity.

How is the test performed?

Sensors called electrodes will be attached to the skin and used to detect electrical signals. These signals are then recorded and examined by your doctor to see if they’re unusual.

Do I need any preparation for the test?

No preparation is needed for this test.

How long will the assessment take and when does my referrer get the results?

An ECG usually takes between 15-30 minutes to complete and results should be with your doctor within 10 days.

What will I feel during the test?

The test is painless, however there may be slight discomfort when removing the electrodes from your skin.

Are there any risks?

There are no known risks.

Is there an alternative to an ECG?

There are no known alternatives.

Echo – Echocardiogram

What is an Echocardiogram?

An Echocardiogram is a type of Ultrasound scan used to monitor the heart and surrounding blood vessels. It can help diagnose or monitor certain heart conditions.

How is the test performed?

There are several different ways an Echocardiogram can be carried out. The most common type of assessment is a Transthoracic Echocardiogram.

Do I need any preparation for this test?

No preparation is needed for a standard Echocardiogram.

How long will the assessment take and when does my referrer get the results?

The assessment should take between 20-60 minutes and your consultant should have your results within one week.

What will I feel during the test?

A cool gel will be applied to your chest to help the ultrasound waves reach your heart.

Are there any risks?

There are no known risks.

Is there an alternative to an Echocardiogram?

There is no known alternative.
